Mobile-friendly websites are generally scaled-down versions of their desktop counterparts. Although mobile users are able to access, explore and use the website, it doesn't make their experience particularly effortless. Some examples of the challenges that mobile-friendly website users may encounter include large images that take a long time to load, graphics that don’t fit on the screen, and web pages that require constant scrolling, zooming, and pinching. 

While they work somewhat ok, it's important to highlight that websites with poor mobile user experience, may experience a negative impact on their rankings. Therefore, if your website's goal is to generate leads for your business, it's important to make sure that it is not just mobile-friendly, but also optimized for mobile use. 

Mobile Optimized Websites 

On the other hand, a mobile-optimized website is one that has been specifically designed and built to look and function well on mobile devices. This may include using a mobile-specific layout, with a single-column design and larger CTA buttons, as well as using mobile-specific features such as click-to-call buttons. A mobile-optimized website is also optimized for different screen sizes and resolutions, so it will look great on all mobile devices. 

 

Basically, these types of websites follow a mobile-first approach. Meaning that the website was first conceived to be used by mobile users primarily. However, this does not mean that these websites are not compatible with desktop users. On the contrary, they can be used by both.  

Responsive Website Design 

Our last entry in the list could be summarized as a combination of the two previous ones. Responsive website design (RWD) is an approach to web development that ensures that a website can be accessed on any device or screen size, regardless of its orientation. This means that the content and layout of a website will adjust automatically to fit the screen size of the device it's being viewed on. 

 

This can be achieved by using a flexible grid-based layout and using CSS media queries to change the styling of the website based on the screen size.
